LINGUA primarily focuses on research on language learning and teaching in context of EFL/ESL, in a variety of levels including school level, university level, institute level, etc. Researches on culture and linguistics are of the secondary interest of LINGUA. LINGUA welcomes papers on teaching and learning any component of language, including skills and sub-skills, as well as teaching/learning translation, literature, etc. Research on the use of new technologies such as CALL and MALL for teaching/learning languages is also considered appropriate for LINGUA. Research on culture of various perspectives as well as linguistics is also welcome. In addition, LINGUA also considers papers in the areas of applied linguistics, pragmatic, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, literary works, and discourse analysis

<![CDATA[This study investigates symbols on tradition ritual to commemorate the day of birth or bancaan weton in Javanese tradition. Symbols are associated with daily practices for moral and social contexts. This study used ethnography with phenomenological setting for the data collection. Qualitative approach was used to analyze the data. The study assigned informants from Kasunanan Surakarta, Mangkunegaran, traditional chief, ulama, and culture practitioners. The study discovers that bancaan weton symbolizes harmony, tolerance, and implementation of moral, social, spiritual and religious valaues. In abstract form, values of bancaan weton originate from Javanese Moral Teaching and spiritual philosophy of conducting harmony and balance between the man and God the Almigthy. The tradition squarely undertakes genuine teaching values of Javanese, however, the existence may dilute as pride to prevent the tradition by Javanese themselves may lax.]]>

<![CDATA[This study is aimed to evaluate integration of local culture contents in the thematic textbook for the fifth grade students of Elementary School is crucial to include. This study used descriptive qualitative design. This study revealed that local culture contents incurred in the textbook comprised of: (1) internal and external local culture load, (2) development of individual and society local culture domain, (3) reading texts, istructional texts, exercises and assignments, reflection views, communication texts to students parents, and (4) implementation of local culture theories that is not yet optimally described.]]>

<![CDATA[This study is qualitative designed to analyze the character of the novel through psychological approach. The subject of the study is the works of D.H. Lawrence, focusing on the novel "Sons and Lovers". Two kinds of corpuses for analysis were literary elements corpuses, plot, theme, setting and atmosphere, point of view and the main characters corpuses of Gertrude Morel, Walter Morel, William Morel & Miriam Leiver. Data were collected from literary research and library research. The study revealed that the main characters of sons and lovers are round ones. Miriam was said to be very religious, yet she had sexual intercourse before her marriage. It is shown that there are some aspects of moral quality. Educational value appeared in nuance that revenge does not give us satisfaction. Through out the novel, relevant implication appeared that sexual desire does not belong to love. Sex is also physiological needs and sometimes an expression of love. The self‑actualization need is dominant in Paul. ]]>

<![CDATA[Human learning is fundamentally a process that involves the making of errors. But the issue of error and how errors are treated in the classroom is still dilemma for many teachers. One learning approach stated that error correction was avoided, because it makes learners shut off their attempts at communication. However, other learning approaches stated that correction was highly valued, to increase students’ motivation in learning. For the best decision, teacher can use five key questions dealing with errors’ treatment: (1) should learners’ errors be corrected ?; (2) when should learners’ errors be corrected?; (3) which errors should be corrected?; (4) how should learners’ errors be corrected; and (5) who should do the correcting?]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims at seeing process freshmen of English Department students at Balitar Islamic University improve their English speaking proficiency implementing communicative approach as the teaching teachniques. This study implemented classroom action research, and was conducted for one semester in the academic year 2014/2015. Improvements were focused on fluency, accuracy and cohesiveness involving 26 subjects. Conducted in two cycles that succesviley involved research procedures on planning, acting, observing, and reflection, this study revealed the following findings. First, speaking fluency of the learners increases from 65% in the first cycle into 85% in the second cycle. Second, speaking accuracy improves from 68% in the first cycle into 88% in the second cycle. Third, cohesiveness of uttarences imoproves from 70% in the first cycle into 86% in the sevond cycle.]]>

<![CDATA[This study is aimed at seeing the item quality of English test used for Leaving Exam at SMP Samarinda. Analysis is used to see item difficulty (p), discrimination (D), distracter effectiveness, validity, and reliability. The results of analysis show that of 45 items, 19 (42.2%) must be dropped due to the poor p and 17 (37.8%) receive the low D. Analysis of p and D reveal that of 45 items, only 5 (11.1%) items are applicable, 21 (46.7%) need revision, and 19 (42.2%) should be dropped. The distracters are also poor, as 25 (55.6%) items have very poor distracters. Validity testing under Product Moment formula achieved low value (0.346) and reliability testing under KR-21 shows fair value (0.650).]]>

<![CDATA[The purpose of this study is to see the effectiveness of TV adverts to improve ability on writing short story. Adversts broadcast in TV are used as exposures and writing short story is the focus of learning object. The study uses classroom action research as the research design and assigns the nineth grade students of SMPN 3 Balikpapan as the subject. The study is conducted in two cylcles with two meeting each. The study reveals that adverts as the media is effective to teach short story. Learning activities indicate enthusiasm and students are eager to learn. The activities increase from cycle I and achieve optimum result on cycle II. The result of achievement in the cycles is also satisfied that raise significantly from cycle I to cycle II. The study evidently reveals that TV adverts are meaningful to improve ability to write short story.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper describes how narrative texts are explored as the sources of values for morale development of the learners of SMP levels. Narrative texts that refer to tales or stories described in the finction versions may be written in English or in Bahasa Indonesia the teaching values in the text are relevant to the students’ level of comprehension. Morale values from the texts are extracted into its teaching including honesty, courtesy, responsibility, perseverance, struggle, religiosity, tolerance, discipline, self-reliance, and work hard. Selected texts are identified bybthe teacher and instructional objectives are identified in adherence to the competencies and learning outcomes. Characterustics of good texts including authenticity, complexity of languages and vocabulary selection are crucial in the process.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper describes theoretical framework on (1) theoretical underpinning of paired meaning, (2) instructional activities explaining proverbs using paired meaning, and (3) identifying benefits and weaknesses of paired meaning techniques. This paper used content analysis to analyze data. The analyses showed that (1) paired meaning techniques are a techniques developed upon active teaching-learning. Its implementation integrates two techniques: play and discovery; (2) Teaching techniques are implemented through identifying paired meaning from the proverbs randomly. The search is developed through simulation from paired group or in group; (3) Model of paired meaning has benefits that it improves students’ motivation through games, but it is short of spending too much time in the implementation.]]>
